Description
Woolworth's, located at 19 and 21 Sankey Street, was built in 1864 by architect John Douglas. The building features a modern shop front with Gothic-style elements above. On the first floor, there are windows arranged in groups of three, two, two, and two, each with pointed arches supported by granite columns with foliated capitals. Above the first floor, there is a carved frieze. The top floor has four 2-light windows with pointed heads, which are similar in style but simpler than those on the first floor. A carved plaque displaying the date 1864 is also present. Woolworth's is part of a group that includes the Church of the Holy Trinity and Nos 19 to 25 (odd).
