Description
The bridge over the brook and dell at the head of Lymm Dam was constructed between 1918 and 1919 by Fairclough Brothers for W.H. Lever and C.G. Dewhurst. It is made of reinforced concrete and features three arched ribs that support the road deck, which is held up by vertical struts with a square section. The quadrant abutments are designed with banded rustication. The parapets have moulded plinths and parapets, each containing six open panels over the span and two over each abutment, which feature moulded balusters. Where damaged, these balusters reveal a central rod made of iron or steel. This bridge is an early example of an open arched-rib reinforced concrete structure and represents a largely unexecuted plan by the proprietors for residential development of land overlooking Lymm Dam.
