Description
Holcroft Hall is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, which was altered and enlarged in the 18th century with further modifications made later. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a slate roof, standing two storeys tall with an attic and comprising four bays, including an added wing. It has a small porch projection with stone coping and kneelers, cross windows on the main block, and twin mullion windows on the wing. Some timber eaves gutters are present, along with a massive chimney stack.
Inside, there is a Gothic stone mullioned window located on a wall that is now internal, on the staircase. The first floor showcases two heavily moulded beams, while lesser moulded and bevelled beams can be found elsewhere. There is a priest hole in the chimney stack with access from the attic, as well as massive braced collar trusses, purlins, and wallplates, along with heavy ceiling joists. Sealed triangular openings in the external wall below the wallplate point downwards. According to Croston's History from around 1920, Maud Holcroft is said to have married Captain Blood from this house. The interior has been awarded a star for its historic interest.
