Description

Light Oaks Hall is a house dating from the early 17th century, situated on Light Oaks Road in Leigh. It is a brick building with stone dressings and a slate roof. Originally a three-bay house, only two bays now remain, with the left gable rebuilt and a rear addition constructed in the 20th century. The front elevation is notable for its exceptional quality. The left bay has a ten-light mullion window, and the right bay has a five-light window on each of the two floors, all incorporating king mullions and hoodmoulds. The original studded front door is set within a heavy, chamfered surround, topped by an obtuse-angled lintel. A distinctive feature of the front is the lozenge pattern decoration in black brick headers extending over the entire first floor. A prominent chimney stack projects from the right gable-end, and a small wing extends from the rear of the right bay, with a 20th-century extension to the rear of the left bay. The interior retains 17th-century panelling throughout the main house-part, featuring three armorial panels, a fourth panel displaying combined arms and the date 1657, and three heavy ovolo-moulded beams with run-out stops. A 20th-century fire surround and overmantle have been added. The building is referenced in the Victoria County History of Lancashire, published in 1907.
