Description
Speakman House is a house dated 1630, as indicated by a datestone, but it has undergone extensive additions and alterations over the years. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a slate roof. It has three bays, with two and three storeys. The second and third bays are gabled and represent the original 1630 structure. Most window openings are from the 19th century, with 20th-century casements. The original door in the second bay has been blocked, and a 20th-century door and porch have been added to the right side. Notable interior features include deep ovolo-moulded beams with stepped stops on both the ground and first floors, a dogleg stair with a closed string, an octagonal newel, and tapering finials. In the principal chamber, there is a painted legend that reads: "Who can find a virtuous woman etc.," referencing Proverbs 31 verses 10 and 11, dated 1647.
