Description

Halton Castle is a ruinous castle dating from around 1070, built for Nigel, the first Norman Baron of Halton. It is constructed from red sandstone and has an almost elliptical shape, sitting atop a high mound of sandstone and earth, which allows it to dominate the surrounding plain. The castle features roughly squared sandstone on both the inner and outer faces, with corework infilling. Some sections of the walls still stand high and contain remnants of windows with tracery, indicating alterations made in the late medieval period. Additionally, high standing remains within the southeast walls were added around 1800 to enhance the castle's appearance from Norton Priory. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
