Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1851 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is constructed of red sandstone and features a slate roof. The church has a lofty four-bay nave with a side aisle and a chancel roof that is at a lower level. A bell-turret is located on the east gable of the nave. The walls are made of squared snecked rubble and include angle buttresses on the chancel and corner buttresses on the nave. The main Gothic entrance is situated in the south aisle. The windows of the chancel and nave are curvilinear, while the clerestorey windows are trefoil-shaped, all featuring drip moulds with stops carved as faces. Each window contains stained glass. The octagonal bell-turret has trefoil openings topped with gablets, and there are gablet kneelers on the gables.
Inside, the church has Gothic aisle arcades supported by clusters of four shafts. The organ chamber and Memorial Chapel are located on either side of the chancel. Notable interior features include a fine alabaster reredos and oak chapel screens. The chancel has a boarded waggon roof, while the nave has a similar roof with exposed rafters, with trusses supported on corbels carved as faces. The oak benches in the church are designed with simple poppyheads.
