Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church built between 1908 and 1910 by the architectural firm Austin & Paley. It is constructed of red sandstone with a main roof covered in red tiles and lead covering the roofs of the aisles. The church features a west tower that is integrated with the aisles, a five-bay nave, transepts, and a chancel, all designed in the perpendicular style. The square tower has a full-height octagonal staircase projecting from the southeast corner and corner buttresses at the southwest corner. An oak panelled door is set in a Gothic opening, with large perpendicular style windows above it, and louvred perpendicular windows at the bell stage on all sides. The northwest porch is set diagonally to the building. All windows are in the perpendicular style, with stained glass in the chancel windows. Above the clerestorey windows on the east side, there is a Latin religious text carved in masonry.

Inside, massive octagonal columns support the tower and enclose an eight-ribbed vault with a circular opening for the bell rope. Large panelled round columns support the chancel arch, while four smaller octagonal columns supporting Gothic arches form the aisles. The single bay north transept houses the organ, while the south transept, known as the Lady Chapel, is three bays long. The wall surfaces are rock-faced, and the main roof features collar trusses with curved struts extending from the tie beams.
