Description
The Old Police Station is a former police station and court of petty sessions, now serving as a Job Creation Centre. It was built in 1831 with additions made in 1859. The building features a red sandstone facade but is primarily constructed of brick, topped with a slate roof. It has a two-storey facade with four bays, where the earlier three eastern bays are set forward. The entrance is flanked by full-height Ionic pilasters that support a frieze and a modillion pediment. The facade exhibits full rustications up to the first floor level, along with a moulded string course. The windows are sash, with those on the first floor adorned with cornices supported by consoles. A modillion cornice with a solid parapet crowns the building, which also features an upstand with a shaped base and a pediment that holds a clock. The left-hand bay has twin Ionic pilasters flanking a door with stone-carved architraves and a flat moulded head supported on consoles. The building has a modillion cornice with a balustrade parapet and a hipped roof. A red brick addition was constructed in 1897, and the interior is noted to have no particular interest.
