Description

The Mersey Locks on the St Helens Canal, located at Spike Island, were built in 1833 and feature restored gates. These locks are part of a pair that manage a 12-foot difference in water level between the canal and the River Mersey. They are constructed from large timber, with massive posts and rails, and include a canal end gate with a catwalk. The restoration of the east lock's gates and the removal of the gates at the north end of the west lock were part of an enhancement scheme completed in 1981.
