Description
Widnes Town Hall, built in 1885 by F & G Holme, is a town hall constructed from brickwork with terra cotta dressings and a slate roof. The building features a symmetrical facade with nine windows across two storeys. The gable and central entrance bays, which have large windows, are set forward from the main structure. The front entrance is adorned with an ornate segmental pediment supported by console blocks and twin pilasters, and above this, at the first floor level, there are Griffins holding shields. Decorative tile bands run every three courses up to the first floor string course, with aprons beneath the first floor windows and swags and faces on the keystones of the second floor windows. All the windows are sash style. The building has a modillion eaves cornice, and above this, there is a parapet that is partly balustraded and partly solid brickwork. The roof features a reeded tile ridge, and the chimneys have pilaster strips. The interior is not of special interest.
