Description
Gossages Tower is a Grade II listed building located on Mersey Road in the former Borough of Widnes. Built around 1860 for the early chemical manufacturers Hutchinson & Co., it is rendered with a slate roof and primarily consists of four storeys with a two-storey wing. The building features classical elements such as a projecting plinth, rusticated quoins, and projecting bands at the sill level. The ground floor windows have curved heads with keystones and architraves, while flat moulded heads are present on the upper floors. A moulded string course runs midway up the ground floor windows, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The main building has sash windows, with three on the ground floor. The entrance consists of a double two-panel bolection moulded door with a plain fanlight, flanked by flat pilasters. The two-storey section and the interiors are not of particular interest. Gossages Tower is a prominent feature in the landscape and was formerly known as the Tower Building.
