Description

Wolverley is a house with an early 17th century core that was extended and remodeled in the late 18th century, with some minor additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of Flemish bond orange and red brick, featuring some yellow headers, and has a graduated Welsh slate roof with a stone ridge and coping. The building has one gable and lateral brick chimneys and a long rectangular plan, possibly evolving from a 17th century hall and crosswing.

The south front is two stories high and has six bays. The right three bays create a symmetrical facade, showcasing channelled stone heads and moulded composite stone sills beneath 20th century steel casements with glazing bars. The central bay features a recent Tuscan porch and a doorcase leading to a six-panelled door. The left three bays are set back and contain two and three-light steel casements under segmental brick heads, along with a central six-panelled door in a heavy wooden case. A sun lounge has been added to the left side.

Inside, the room to the left of the entrance displays timber small framing that is also visible in parts of the brick skin. Several rooms feature ovolo-moulded ceiling beams with jewelled stops from the same period. Most of the interior fittings date from the late 18th century, including a well-crafted oak staircase with turned balusters, a moulded and ramped handrail with a spiral end, and cut brackets on the open string. The staircase well is adorned with fielded panelling, and there are four and six-fielded panelled doors in doorcases with panelled soffits. Additionally, fragments of 17th century painted glass can be found in the stairwell window.
