Description
The Old Station is a former railway station, now used as offices, built in 1897 for the London and North Western Railway at the expense of the 1st Duke of Westminster. It is constructed from English bond red Ruabon brick with red sandstone dressings and features a hipped Lakeland green slate roof with pointed lead finials. The building has three brick chimneys with twisted stacks and stone mouldings.
The west front is one storey high and has six bays. It includes a moulded stone plinth and plain strip pilasters that support a moulded cornice. The pilasters, which have capstones, once supported a platform canopy. The central doorway has a moulded surround with a basket-arched head and a two-light fanlight above. There are five additional doors, four of which have shouldered flat heads and two-light basket-arched fanlights. The east front presents a more ordered facade, with the central three bays stepping forward under a hipped roof supported by four massive wooden brackets. A date plaque and monogram are located above the door.
Inside, the building features six rooms arranged in a line from north to south: a lavatory, stationmaster's office, ticket office, parcel office, porter's room, and ladies' waiting room. All rooms have a pine panelled dado, and some include simple stone fireplaces.
