Description
The L-shaped range of farm buildings at Cheaveley Hall Farm dates from the mid to late 19th century and was likely designed by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. The buildings feature orange brick on the lower level and a timber-framed upper storey, topped with a red tile roof. The layout forms an L-shape around a cobbled yard, with the south-west front of the south-west range consisting of one and two storeys and 16 bays. The centerpiece is a barn that rises two storeys and has five bays arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. The lower storey includes brick mullioned windows, while the upper storey has wood mullioned windows. A central rectangular cart opening is flanked by stone spur stones, and a gable loading bay projects on brackets supported by stone corbels. Atop the ridge is a two-tier circular dovecote with lead flashing, a pyramidal shingled roof, and a weather vane. To the left is a long shippon with one storey, featuring small-pane windows, and the left end has two bays under a gable. The rear of the building showcases three timber-framed gables with access to the shippons. Inside, a continuous feeding passage runs along the back of the barn and the range, with Gothic arched feeding holes for each pair of stalls. The north-west front of the north-west range also has one and two storeys and consists of 10 bays. The left end bay features a gabled loading bay above and is adjacent to a tall driftway with a gabled hood. The remaining structure is built of brick with small-pane windows and ventilation patterns, and part of it has a sawtooth band at the first floor.
