Description
Stud Lodge, built in 1883 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster, is a two-storey picturesque red brick lodge featuring timber-framing and a red tile roof. A circular parlour is located to the north-west, topped with a corbelled half-timbered octagonal bedroom that has a blunt spire with swept tiling above the eaves. The building includes a sandstone band and lintels, moulded hard brick mullions, reveals, and cills, as well as a battered brick plinth. A shaped central red brick chimney is present, along with recessed yellow brick panels that have moulded hard red brick surrounds and gothic blank arch detailing on the upper storey. The roof features tile ridges, shaped tiles on the hips, and shaped lead finials on the spire and ridge ends. The front door is shaped and boarded, with ornamental wrought iron hinges set under a basket arch opening in a hip-roofed porch. The windows have iron casements with leaded glazing.
Inside, there are six-panel doors with moulded stiles and rails, and a staircase with a moulded square newel and moulded rectangular balusters. A hip-roofed wash-house with a small chimney and closet is located across a walled yard, featuring boarded doors. There is also a later single-storey tile-roofed extension to the south, which is in keeping with the original design and serves as a bathroom and coalhouse.
