Description
Eccleston Lodge Gates, Piers and Wing Railings are a pair of carriage gates built in 1894 by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke of Westminster. They are made of wrought and cast iron and are hung from square openwork iron piers that originally supported gas-lit lanterns. On either side of the gates are pedestrian side gates, flanked by quadrant wing railings set on sandstone plinths. The carriage gates feature ornate designs, including a "W", a ducal coronet, and a Cheshire sheaf as central motifs. The Grosvenor motto, "Virtus non stemma," is painted on a cast iron Garter on each main pier. This gateway is part of a group that includes Eccleston Lodge and the adjacent Causeway, both located in Eaton Parish.
