Description

Deer Park Cottage is a cottage built in 1873 by John Douglas for the 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster. It features a picturesque asymmetrical design with oak framed walls resting on a projecting sandstone plinth. The cottage is 1½ storeys high and has red tile roofs, shaped brick chimneys, and tile-hung gables with shaped bargeboards. The windows are shaped oak mullioned and transomed, with leaded lights set in iron casements. There is an arched oak porch beneath a catslide roof and an oak bay in the parlour, which includes a square oriel in a bracketed projecting gable above the main bedroom. The porch arch has carved spandrels, and there are carved bressumers and tie beams throughout. Under the main first floor windows, painted floral pargetting adds decorative detail. The entrance features a framed and boarded oak door with an ornate wrought ring handle. Inside, there is a newel staircase with shaped flat balusters and six-panel doors. This cottage exemplifies John Douglas's pioneering work in the new vernacular movement, showcasing his confidence and originality.
