Description
Christ Church, built in 1871 by J L Pearson, is a church constructed from tooled ashlar red sandstone with a red tile roof. The building features a 4-bay nave and a 2-bay chancel that form a single range, along with a north transept and vestry, a south porch, and a bellcote. The south porch projects and is supported by angle buttresses, featuring a chamfered two-centred arched entrance on colonnettes with a label mould. There is a similar door behind it, adorned with ornate iron furniture. The south face includes a moulded sill band and some buttressing. The nave has 2-light windows with trefoil heads and geometric tracery, while the chancel has more complex 3-light windows. The west end is divided by a buttress, with a 2-light window on either side. The sanctus bellcote on the gable has two semi-circular arched openings and a single similar opening above in its gable.
Inside, the nave windows have splayed reveals and depressed heads. The roof features closely set arched-braced collar trusses with a collar purlin. The entry to the north transept vestry has an almost semi-circular arch, with a screen dating from 1920. The chancel is separated from the nave by a low wall and a double-chamfered arch, with splayed reveals and an arch on colonnettes leading to the east window. The chancel roof is panelled.
