Description

Stone Houses is a former farmhouse, now divided into three houses, dated 1686 with some 20th-century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of buff Manley sandstone with an ashlar finish, topped by a Welsh slate roof featuring a stone ridge and a brick ridge chimney, which is similar on the crosswing. It has an H-shaped lobby-entry plan and is two stories high with a four-bay front. The structure features a chamfered plinth and a cyma-moulded band at the first floor. The end bays project forward under stone-coped and kneelered gables. There are inserted doorways and four-light chamfered stone mullioned windows below, with four-light windows that have round-headed lights above, all under flat cyma-moulded hoods. In the central two bays, the band rises above the original doorway, which has a segmental arch and an inscribed lintel with the initials T T and a lozenge motif from 1686. To the left, there is a five-light chamfered stone mullioned window and a four-light wooden casement window above. While fenestration remains on the other sides, some mullions have been lost. There are small 20th-century additions to the right and rear. The interior of No. 3 features a quarter-round moulded ceiling beam, but the remainder has not been inspected and no other features have been reported. This is a substantial house that is quite conservative in its plan and detailing for its date.
