Description

The roadside wall and gatepiers, along with the west terrace walls at Utkinton Hall, date from around 1700 and were built for Sir John Crewe, with some 20th-century additions. The structure features tooled ashlar sandstone raised with drystone rubble walling. The right-hand end of the wall stands approximately 2.5 meters high and includes a chamfered plinth and a cyma-moulded coping. The rubble portion has a decoratively moulded coping. The left-hand end of the wall is about 0.8 meters high. At the center, there is a pair of tall gatepiers, which have a moulded plinth on a tall stone base and bodies made of Flemish bond brick framed in stone, with beading on the edges. The gatepiers are topped with a heavily moulded cornice and ball finials. Inside, there are stone jambs with consoles above, and between them is a low blocking wall made of stone-coped brick from an earlier period. The stone wall extends to form a revetment wall for the west terrace in front of the house, which features a stone-coped brick wall with a narrow gateway.
