Description

The Bailiff's House is a house dating from the early 17th century that has been extensively renovated in the late 20th century. It features a mix of partly tooled ashlar and rubble sandstone, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof and a small stone chimney. The building has a long rectangular plan and a three-storey, five-bay front in ashlar with a slightly protruding base. The ground and first floors have ovolo-moulded two-light windows, while the smaller two-light windows on the upper floors have ovolo-moulded mullions that are stopped at the top and bottom.

The south front, which is three-storey and six-bay, is constructed of rubble and has large quoins. It features similar windows, although some have been partly restored and one has been copied. At the center of this front is an added gabled porch that includes a reset moulded stone doorcase and a modern door. On the right end, there is a flight of stone steps that runs parallel to the house, leading to an inserted doorway at the first floor.

Inside, no original features remain except for the roof trusses, which consist of a tiebeam with pairs of diagonal struts. This building is unusual due to its very regular arrangement of windows, suggesting it may have served a special function, possibly as the forest courthouse or as the residence for an officer of Delamere Forest.
