Description

No. 16 Northgate is a former terrace of four cottages, now a house, dating from the early 18th century with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of washed and rendered rubble sandstone and features a thatched roof with three brick chimneys. It is one storey and has an attic, with a six-bay front. The windows are small and consist of four panes each. The third bay has a door with five steps leading up to it, topped by a thatched gabled hood. The right end of the building retains the appearance of an original cottage, with a four-pane window on each storey and a board door accessed by steps. There are also windows on both storeys at the rear.

Inside, the three main rooms feature small inglenooks supported by stone pillars and wooden bressumers. There are stone gates with basket-arched openings that house 19th-century iron ranges made by Storrars of Chester. The interior also has exposed beams and joists, and a small winder staircase is located at the right-hand end. Upstairs, there is a queen post truss with wattle and daub infill and wind-braced purlins.
