Description
The walls and steps of the east terrace and associated formal gardens at Tirley Garth were constructed around 1912 by T H Mawson for R A Prestwich. The structure features irregularly coursed red sandstone walls and York stone paving. The paved terrace adjacent to the house includes lines of steps and an openwork parapet. On the east side, the terrace is buttressed and contributes to two walled rectangular lawns that are separated by steps and a pathway. The southern lawns are enclosed by low walls with bold ramps, while the northern side is bordered by a wall with an open parapet. Each corner of the eastern side of the lawns contains small enclosed gardens. To the north, there is a circular pond surrounded by walls, in the center is a hexagonal garden with a formal bed that is partly bordered by yew hedges, and to the south, the steps curve around a circular pool that features a half-domed canopy with a fountain.
