Description
St Marys Church of England School is a school built in 1878 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. It is designed in a Tudor style and has a 'T' shape, constructed from buttressed squared snecked red sandstone with a red tile roof. The school is attached to a former schoolmaster's house, also in a 'T' shape. Notable features include an octagonal steepled stone belfry turret, stone-coped gables with shaped finials, and a stone chimney with two attached octagonal flues. The roof of the school hall has a louvred dormer ventilator. The building features mullioned windows, some of which are arched, and straight-headed windows with individual lights that are also arched, all with patterned leaded glazing. A niche in the front gable displays a crowned figure teaching a child, carved in stone. There are two entrance doorways with shaped boarded doors on ornate wrought iron hinges, set in arched stone openings. A modern flat-roofed brick extension at the back is not prominent. The school and the former schoolmaster's house create a distinguished picturesque group, with the massing and detailing of each element, though small in scale, giving a friendly and informal character that is unusual for Victorian schools.
