Description
The Cottage, located on Old Church Way, is a house dating from around 1800. It features a pebbledashed exterior and a hipped grey slate roof. The building has a symmetrical, Gothick style entrance front that is two stories high and consists of three bays, highlighted by a projecting castellated porch. The corners of the house are chamfered between the east (garden front), north, and south faces. The windows have Tudor-arched openings, with some original iron Gothick casements and others that are replicas made in lead, set in original sub-frames. There are replacement French windows on the south side, fitted in the original opening with a label above. The west side has a recent six-panel door situated in an open lattice porch with a bellcast roof that matches the style of the house. Two rectangular pebbledashed chimneys are symmetrically placed on the roof.
A simple brick outbuilding with a lean-to slate roof and one Gothick casement is connected to the house by a sandstone wall, surrounding a stone-paved yard. Inside, the house has been altered, featuring a replacement staircase. Five-panel doors with cases and architraves are present in the main ground floor rooms, while narrower three-panel doors remain in some areas. The principal rooms, located in the northeast and southeast corners, have moulded plaster cornices. In the northeast room, there is an iron grate set in a Tudor-arched surround, although the overmantel has been removed. The southeast room contains a Regency style fireplace that was brought in from Bath.
