Description
This building is a Post Office with a Postmaster's House and an attached house to the right, constructed in the 1890s by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke of Westminster. It is made of brown brick with slightly projecting stone dressings, and the brickwork was originally rendered white. The roofs are covered with Westmorland green slate. The structure has two storeys and features seven windows, including two half-octagon, two-storey hipped bays. There is a central stone-coped front gable on the right and four shaped brick chimneys.
On the left side, there is a flat-roofed open porch supported by carved consoles, while the right side has a gabled half-timbered porch on shaped brackets. Sandstone doorsteps lead to the entrances. The windows are Queen Anne timber casements with three lights and leaded glazing, which project from the wall on shaped wooden brackets. The doors are shaped, framed, and boarded, partly glazed with four small panes. The simple back of the building suggests it was an older structure that was reworked by Douglas and Fordham. The interior has not been inspected. Overall, this building is a good example of the Vernacular Revival style.
