Description
The Police House, built around 1880 for the 1st Duke of Westminster and likely designed by John Douglas, is a two-storey house in the Jacobean style. It features a rectangular shape with three windows on the front. The exterior is made of coursed tooled sandstone, with dressed stone surrounds around the windows and the front door, which faces west. The roof is covered with Westmorland green slate and has sandstone-coped end gables, with chimneys rebuilt in red brick.
Notable architectural details include a moulded string course at the first floor level and drip-moulds above the door and upper windows. The windows are iron casements with leaded glazing, featuring shaped upper panes on the lower storey. The front door is framed and boarded with a distinctive shape.
To the north of the main building, there is an 'L' shaped single-storey outhouse, connected to the house by a sandstone yard wall. A plain sandstone garden wall, also linked to the house, has square pyramid-topped gateposts. The left end of the Post Office is built against the rear of the Police House. The interior has not been inspected.
