Description
The Former Schoolmaster's House, built in 1878 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster, is attached to St Mary's Church of England School. This house is designed in an asymmetrical, late Tudor style and is primarily constructed of sandstone, featuring an oak-framed upper storey on the projecting front gable and tile hanging between the upper and lower red tile roofs. It has two shaped sandstone and brown brick chimneys. The windows in the stone walls have shaped mullions and arched lights, with an oak mullioned window in the front bedroom that has a pentice roof above it. The windows also feature patterned leaded glazing set in iron casements. The entrance includes a 9-panel shaped door with moulded muntins, stiles, and rails, along with ornate wrought iron hinges and a handle. There is incised text in the beam of the left gable. The house is situated on a terrace with a retaining wall alongside St Mary's C of E School.
Inside, there is a painted dogleg newel staircase with moulded flat balusters, and the doors are 6-panel with moulded muntins, stiles, and rails. The property includes a stone-walled back yard with a one-storey outbuilding made of stone and brick.
