Description

Sun Houses is an asymmetric pair of estate cottages built in 1882 by John Douglas. They are designed in the style of the 19th century and feature a stone-dressed brown brick lower storey, while the upper storey is partly pebbledashed and partly tile hung. The cottages have red roofs made of shaped tiles, with gables and hips, and two shaped brick chimneys.

Both cottages have two end gables and two front gables that display ornate raised pargetting, which depicts suns, allegorical figures, creatures, birds, and floral patterns, some of which suggest implied eroticism. The upper storey jetties out at the front (east). The left cottage has an open recessed porch with a timber balustrade. The windows are mullioned, with stone in the lower storey and oak in the upper storey, featuring leaded glazing set in iron frames. The right cottage has a seven-panel door, while the left cottage has a four-panel door.

Inside, the cottages have panelled doors with well-executed mouldings on the rails, stiles, and muntins, along with individually designed architraves. These cottages are richly detailed and exhibit an almost Edwardian expression.
