Description

Number 78 Street is a town house located in Chester, likely built in the mid-18th century. The building is constructed of yellow-brown brick in Flemish bond and features a grey slate roof that is hipped at the street corner. It stands three storeys tall.

The front facing Watergate Street has a red sandstone plinth and includes two tripartite sash windows with 4;12;4 panes, which have painted stone sills and cambered arches made of reddish gauged brick on the first and second storeys. The third storey has casements inserted into the original window openings. A modillion stone cornice runs along the top, and there are chimneys at each end of the building.

The entrance is located on Linenhall Street and features a door with four bolection-moulded panels and a three-pane overlight, all set within a simple pedimented doorcase. To the right of the door, there are two small-pane street windows in wood sub-frames, which are set in inserted chamber-arched openings. The second storey has two street-framed casements in original camber-arched sash openings, while the third storey features a 12-pane flush sash and a sash altered to six panes, both with painted sills and timber lintels. An eaves facia-board is present along the roofline.

The rear gable-end of the building is cement rendered and has a replaced door along with a replaced metal casement on each storey. Access to the interior was not possible during inspection.
