Description

Numbers 88 and 90 on Watergate Street are two townhouses built together, likely in the late 18th century, which have since been altered and converted into offices in the late 20th century. They are constructed from Flemish bond brown brick and topped with a grey slate roof. The buildings rise three storeys, with added dormers in the loft. Each former house features a small opening to a cellar set in the painted stone plinth.

The entrance to No. 88 has two steps leading to a door on the east side, which consists of four fielded panels and a plain overlight, all within a recessed porch that has been restored or rebuilt, complete with a simple pediment on console brackets. Each house originally had two recessed sash windows on each storey, with painted stone sills and wedge lintels. The sashes on the first and second storeys have 12 panes, while those on the third storey have 6 panes. The doorway to No. 90 has been replaced with a facsimile sash, and the sash boxes are visible in No. 90.

The cornice and roofline are continuous, with two reverse-pitch slate-cheeked dormers inserted into the roof of each house, along with ridge chimneys. The rear wall has been rebuilt, featuring sills and cambered heads of brick above three 12-pane recessed sashes on the first and second storeys and a 6-pane sash on the third storey. The interior has been rebuilt to maintain a similar style but does not retain original features. The buildings are included for their group value.
