Description
The Market Hall, originally known as Market Court, is a market hall built in the mid to late 18th century. It features plum coloured Flemish bond brick with a slate roof and ashlar dressings. The building stands two storeys high and has an entrance front with five bays, slightly projecting lateral bays, a stone plinth, quoins, and a band between the floors.
On the left side, there is a 20th-century doorway with a glazed door and a pedimental surround. The right-hand ground floor projection includes both right-hand bays and has a round-arched driveway with stone springers set low, which is a later alteration likely made when the ground floor was enclosed. The centre of the front displays two arches from the original triple-arched market space, featuring a Tuscan pillar in the centre and a half-pillar on the right, both with entasis.
The first floor has five sash windows, each with three vertical panes and four horizontal panes, stone sills, and flat-arched lintels with key stones. Above is a cornice with a central, slightly projecting broken pediment, and the roof is hipped. To the left, there is a driveway that connects to the Swan Hotel on the first floor. Under this driveway, on the right side, are two large oval panels with moulded surrounds.
Inside, the ground floor, which was originally an open market area, features Tuscan pillars. The first-floor room has some painted panelling and is now connected to the Swan Hotel, serving as the dining room of the Cheshire Hunt.
