Description
The Swan Hotel is a building dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, located on High Street in Tarporley. It is constructed of plum Flemish bond brick with a slate roof and ashlar dressings. The hotel stands three storeys tall and features a symmetrical entrance front with five bays.
The façade includes a moulded ashlar plinth, a band at the level of the first-floor window sills, and a moulded cornice at the top of the wall. On either side of the central section are canted bays that have continuous bands at the ground and second-floor window sill levels. The central windows of these bays are of Venetian form, featuring heavy wedge lintels that rise to arches at the centre. The central lights consist of three panes by four panes, while the lateral lights have one pane by four panes. The windows at the corners also have three panes by four panes with wedge lintels.
The first and second-floor windows are similar in style. In the centre of the entrance is a doorway with a moulded surround, fluted lintel, and a pediment above, which is set above a double flight of five steps with moulded treads. Flanking the doorway are windows with three panes by four panes and wedge lintels. There are three similar windows on both the first and second floors. To the right of the building is a coachway with a first floor above that connects to the Market Hall.
