Description
The Tarporley War Memorial is a First World War memorial and dedication tablet designed by Sir Percy Scott Worthington in 1921. It is made of Portland stone and features a sandstone-bordered slate plaque.
Located within the churchyard of St Helen’s Church, near the churchyard wall, the memorial consists of a lantern cross on an octagonal plinth with decorative carvings on four corners. A figure of Christ with the cross is carved within the lantern, which sits on a two-stepped base. The octagonal plinth is inscribed in ornate medieval-style raised lettering, reading: REMEMBER THE LOVE/ OF THEM THAT CAME/ NOT HOME FROM THE/ WAR IN THE YEARS OF OUR LORD NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN TO NINETEEN HUNDRED/ AND NINETEEN.
At the rear of the memorial, set into the churchyard wall, is a sandstone-bordered slate plaque. The stone border features the inscription in ornate medieval-style raised lettering: IN SACRED SLEEP THEY LIE/ SAY NOT THE BRAVE CAN DIE. Below this, the slate plaque lists the names of those who fell.
An additional section has been added underneath, inscribed with: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
