Description

The stable block at Navigation House was built in 1856 for the Weaver Navigation Trust. It is constructed from Cheshire common bricks and features a slate roof with a single stack on the rear wall. The building has a dentilled eaves cornice and is 1½ storeys high, comprising a cart store and stable with a hayloft above, arranged in two bays.

The stable block has a large off-centre vehicle entrance with a cambered arch, leading to a cobbled area and a large doorway with plank doors to the cart store, as well as a smaller doorway with a plank door to the stable. Above these entrances is a circular pitching hole. To the left of the entrance, there is a rectangular stone plaque with chamfered corners inscribed with the date 1856. Also to the left, on the ground storey, is an original glazing bar casement with a cambered arch, and above it is an original glazing bar sliding sash window with a flat head that interrupts the cornice.

The eastern gable features an open coal store with a ramped wall topped with sandstone coping, as well as a wash-house with a plank door and a glazing bar casement. The western gable has a smaller lean-to. Brick walls attached to the stable block extend eastward to connect with Navigation House and to the west to form a gateway to the yard, which includes double wooden plank gates and an attached plank doorway. This stable block has undergone minor alterations and forms a complete group with Navigation House, contributing to its group value with the former Weaver Navigation Office and Clock Tower.
