Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building located in Dodleston. The lower stage of the tower dates from the early 16th century, while the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1870 by architect John Douglas in the Perpendicular style. It is constructed of red sandstone and features graded grey slate roofs over two parallel ridged spans that cover the nave and north aisle. The church has a two-stage tower topped with a short spire and a crenellated parapet, a nave with a north aisle, a chancel, a north vestry, and a half-timbered gabled north porch. The east windows have panel tracery, and the north and south windows are square-headed with cusped tracery.
Inside, there is a four-bay nave arcade supported by octagonal columns, arched braced trusses in the nave roof, and a painted chancel roof. Notable interior features include a fragment of a medieval coffin and a framed royal coat of arms from 1660 mounted on the west wall. Beneath the tower, there are tombs of Sir Thomas Egerton, Baron Ellesmere and Viscount Brackley, who died in 1617, and his wife Elizabeth, dated 1588, with Latin inscriptions. The church also contains an octagonal font, likely from the 17th century, and late 19th century stained glass in the east window. Additionally, the church is situated next to the site of a motte and bailey castle.
