Description
Dene Well House is a wellhouse built in 1880 by Edmund Kirby for Rowland or Piers Egerton Warburton. It features an oak frame set on a weathered sandstone plinth and has a stone-slate roof with a gable at the front. The structure showcases open framing with large timbers closely spaced, a Tudor-arched entrance adorned with an ornate wrought-iron gate, and cusped oak bargeboards.
Inside, a flowing spout projects water into a stone trough with a bucket-stand. Above the trough, there is a stone plaque inscribed with a verse by R Egerton Warburton, who was a squire and minor poet. The verse reads:
"BLESSINGS IN NEVER ENDING LOVE
ARE ON US POURED FROM HEAVEN ABOVE
THIS RUNNING STREAM WITH CEASELESS FLOW
SPRINGS FROM THE BOUNTEOUS EARTH BELOW;
ALIKE IN BOTH HIS GOODNESS SHOWN
WHOM HEAVEN AND EARTH THEIR MAKER OWN."
Additionally, there is a plain iron railing to the right of the well-house, along with the spout and kerb of a former horse-trough.
