Description
Dutton Sluice, located 150 metres northeast of Dutton Lock, is a sluice built around 1874, constructed from red and cream sandstone and cast iron. It features eight sluice-gates separated by concavely battered piers that have projecting bands of cream stone and round-ended cutwaters. The stone abutments are raking and have been replaced with concrete steps. An iron walkway spans each sluice, supported by a segmental arch of iron, with four pointed arches in each spandrel, giving it a Baroque appearance. This structure is part of the Weaver Navigation Improvement project from 1874 and is comparable to the sluice at Hunt's Lock in Northwich.
