Description
Dutton Locks is a pair of locks built in 1874 for the Weaver Navigation Company. They are constructed from red sandstone and limestone ashlar arranged in bands, featuring wooden gates and cast-iron fittings. The lock gates are operated by Pelton turbines, which have cast-iron covers marked with "NORTHERN FOUNDRY CO. LTD: TURBINE MAKERS: OLDHAM." Control handles are mounted on bollards with spherical tops, standing on circular cast-iron covers inscribed with "HANNA DONALD & WILLS MAKERS, PAISLEY, 1874." These locks are large enough to accommodate sea-going ships and are equipped with semaphore signals to manage entry.
