Description

The Gates is a late Georgian house located on Church Street in Malpas. Constructed from irregular bond brown brickwork with a grey slate roof, it is a two-storey building plus attic, featuring three windows. The main entrance is a five-panel door, with the lower panels being fielded and the upper panel glazed, set within a pedimented wooden case, approached by four stone steps. The windows are flush 12-pane sashes. A flush gable chimney of two flues is positioned on the right, and a projecting four-flue gable chimney is on the left. An early 19th-century, single-bay blank extension is attached to the left side. The interior features a brick-lined rock-cut cellar. The lower storey has five-panel doors, while an oak staircase of one flight to the upper storey and another to the attic includes moulded brackets, reeded newels, a swept rail (except at the top of the upper flight), and stick balusters. Bedroom doors on the upper storey are of five, six, or one fielded panel design, and the door to the right-hand attic is made of three broad boards. The group value stems from its contribution to the architectural character of the area.
