Description
The gates, gatepiers, and steps at the south-west corner of the churchyard in Malpas were originally made for Oulton Park, likely in the 1720s during the time of Vanbrugh's work there, and were relocated to the churchyard in 1773. The piers and steps were probably also constructed in 1773. The gates and the overthrow are made of wrought iron, while the piers and steps are crafted from red sandstone. The gates feature arrowhead dogbars and a floral motif between each pair of vertical rails in the lockrail, along with leafy scrollwork in the central panels of the gates and the overthrow, which includes the Egerton crest. The masonry gatepiers have tall recessed panels on each side, projecting plinths, moulded cornices, and ornate urn finials. This is one of two pairs of gates from Oulton Park, and the design and execution of the gates and overthrow are considered excellent.
