Description
The forward gate piers to Lyme Park Drive date from the late 17th century but were moved around 1860, possibly from the end of the approach past the Cage. They are made of buff sandstone ashlar and are square in plan with stepped projections on each side and buttresses at the rear. The piers sit on a moulded plinth; the front face is plain, while the sides feature semi-circular headed niches and moulded rectangular panels above. At the rear, there is a rectangular sectioned, two-stage buttress topped with a scrolled console. The capstone is weathered on each face above a moulded cornice and supports a circular urn that is decorated with acanthus leaves and contains a compact floral display. The gate piers are located immediately in front of the lodge on Buxton Road West.
