Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings located 48 meters north of the north front of Lyme Park were originally listed as the entrance arch at Lyme Park. The gate piers date from the late 17th century, while the overthrow and corner piers were added in the mid-18th century, possibly by Sampson Brelsford. The gates and railings were created in 1821 by Lewis Wyatt.
The gate piers are made of buff sandstone ashlar and are square in plan, resting on a moulded plinth. They feature clasping rusticated quoins and a semi-circular headed window of a one-room lodge, which is covered by an iron grill, with a semi-circular headed door at the rear. A projecting moulded cornice has stepped capstones that support a pair of lions couchant, facing in opposite directions.
The piers are connected by a semi-circular overthrow that features a gadrooned urn with a twisted center at its center, which is said to be the chimney of the lodge. Below this, there is a pair of rectangular iron gates adorned with spear points, dogbars, and some geometric designs. The spear railings, which rest on a sandstone base, connect the gate piers to the corner piers. Each corner pier has a square rusticated body on a moulded plinth and a moulded cornice above, supporting a stepped capstone and a spread eagle that looks towards the house. The spear railings extend from the corner piers to the house.
