Description
The Stables at Lyme Park, dated 1863, were designed by A. Darbyshire for William Legh. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed buff sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with four stone chimneys on the west range. It has a courtyard plan with a walled area at the rear and is two stories high with a symmetrical nine-bay front arranged as 1:3:1:3:1.
The central opening is set under a low segmental arch with fluting at the joints and a ram's head keystone. Above this, there is a triangular pediment supported by Doric pilasters, which exhibit some vermiculation. The entrance is flanked by a pair of diagonally boarded and framed gates. An armorial plaque of the Legh family, bordered by moulded panels, is positioned on the eaves above the entrance, concealing a square hamper. The end bays project slightly on a plinth and feature raised quoins. Windows have low segmental heads with carved keystones, and there is a modillion cornice above with a coped blocking course. The remaining bays are similar in design. A date tablet is located on the outer wall of the south range. Inside the courtyard, the openings have plain, wedged low segmental heads, and there is a four-bay coach house in the east range.
