Description
The wellhead at the center of Lyme Park's courtyard dates from the 18th century and is likely of Italian origin, having been brought from Venice around 1900. It is made of white marble and stands on two hexagonal buff sandstone steps. The structure consists of six rectangular panels topped with a rounded cornice, creating a circular opening. The exterior of the panels features two armorial plaques, and there is an inscribed Latin poem that reads:
Parciore coelo quamius descendent imber, Hinc erit urgenti quod levet ora siti, Hec tantum hoc hominum praestat solertia verum, In medio dulces aequore aquas.
