Description

The barn located 30 meters east of Chonar Farmhouse is a former part of Denton Old Hall in Manchester, dating from the late 15th century to the 18th century. The barn features brick walls, which were rebuilt around 1980, constructed in English garden wall bond red brick on a stone plinth, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It has a rectangular plan, with the west face showcasing a central cart entrance and a door beneath segmental arches, along with two square pitch holes above. The south gable reveals original timberwork, including a cambered tiebeam adorned with dentils and a central shield. Above, there is small panelling featuring quatrefoil pierced wooden panels and a two-light wood mullioned window.

Inside, the barn consists of four bays, with only the end bays rising to two storeys. Three roof trusses display heavily moulded cambered tiebeams, which have long applied mouldings on the sides and central blank shields. The ends of the tiebeams are arch braced and supported by two diagonal struts above, while the central tiebeam features only a collar. The ceiling beams exhibit similar mouldings, resting at the north end on brackets carved with 'lion heads' that appear to breathe flames on the spandrels. These brackets extend the mouldings onto the posts.
