Description
Hillside Cottage and the attached former stables, located 40 meters northwest of Oak Farmhouse, were originally built around 1865, likely by J.S. Crowther for Robert H. Greg. The building features a timber frame set partly on a brick and stone base, topped with a purple tile roof that has bands of fishscaling and a brick chimney with Tudor-style stacks.
The south front consists of two sections. The left part, which is five bays wide and one storey high, was formerly used as stables. It has doors at either end with 4-centred arched wooden doorcases and board doors that are fitted with iron fishtail hinges. Between these doors are three 3-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows, along with some roundel and chevron timber framing. The eaves are adorned with timber coving, and there are two louvred ventilators on the ridge.
The building continues with a one-storey, two-bay cottage section that features close studding and large arch braces. It has a similar door and doorcase to the left, while the right side has 4-light wooden mullioned windows, with the upper window located in a gabled dormer that includes barge boards and a finial. Additional coving is present on the gable end.
Please note that the two brick ranges at the rear of the stables are not included in this listing.
