Description
Byrons Mill is a silk mill built around 1850 to 1860. It features a red brick exterior on a rubble stone basement and ground floor, with stone and brick dressings and a slate roof. The building has four storeys above the basement and consists of 15 bays, with the central five bays protruding. The corners are marked by giant pilasters topped with stone finials, which also define the central section. The windows have moulded bricks in segmentally-arched heads, although their arrangement varies. The entrance is located in the gable end, and loading doors have been added towards the centre on the second and third floors. At the rear, two towers house the stairs, and there is a lean-to engine house against the central tower, which contains the remains of an engine, including the flywheel and fluted cast-iron columns that support the beam. Inside, the structure consists of a single row of cast-iron columns that carry timber beams on each floor.
