Description

Albion Mill is a former silk mill located on London Road in Macclesfield, dated 1843 and featuring later alterations. Built for Thomas Heapy, the mill is constructed of red brick on a rubble stone basement, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building stands four storeys high above the basement and consists of 15 bays, with the central five bays slightly projecting. Giant pilasters define the corners of the structure. The basement has fifteen 20th-century windows in original openings with timber lintels. Each upper floor features 15 four-pane metal windows in original openings, complete with stone sills and lintels. The eaves are supported by timber brackets, and a stone parapet on the central bays displays a raised pointed panel inscribed 'Albion Mill 1843'. The roof is hipped.

The rear elevation includes projecting stair towers at each end and a central projecting privy tower. The south elevation has three similar bays, along with a six-storey, four-bay wing to the east. This wing features slightly smaller windows on each floor and a segmental voussoired archway leading through the building to the lower right. The stair tower marks the end of a small cross wing, which has a stone architrave at the entrance at the base of the stairs. Inside, the internal structure consists of cast-iron columns supporting timber beams, with a timber roof.
